Eleven-year-old Natsuki lives by rules nobody around her can see: her town manufactures babies, her plush hedgehog is an envoy, and her cousin Yuu says a spaceship left him behind. Six chapters later she is thirty-four, married to a man she found on a website, and two families are waiting for a grandchild. A single voice carries the whole book, and it never asks the reader's permission for anything it claims.

Worum es geht — ohne das Ende zu verratenWhat it is about — without giving away the ending

A first-person narrator who takes herself for an alien, six chapters, two time levels twenty years apart. What happened in between is told in a language that itself changes three times.

FigurenCharacters

›

Seventeen figures carry the novel, and the plush hedgehog Piyyut is counted among them because Natsuki treats him as a person who speaks. After Yuu, the densest names are the mother (120), Uncle Teruyoshi (67), the cram-school teacher Igasaki (64) and the contract husband Tomoya (49). Nobody outside the family circle ever gets more than a handful of mentions.

BeziehungsdiagrammCharacter network

The network has one hub and few side paths. Piyyut appears as a node although he is a toy, because the book grants him speech; Tomoya enters only in the adult half, through a marriage arranged by contract. Edge thickness here is a reading of what the text says about each pair, not a count of how often two names share a paragraph.

Knotengröße = Nennungen. Kantenstärke = Einschätzung beim Lesen, keine Messung.Node size = mentions. Edge weight = judgement from reading, not a measurement.

Warum die Erzählerin anders gezeichnet istWhy the narrator is drawn differently

Natsuki narrates in the first person. A network counting mentions therefore shrinks the protagonist: she is named only when others address her. Her node carries two numbers — name mentions and pronouns — and is sized by the second. Clicking a node opens the info panel at top right: it says who the figure is and what she does in the novel.

Tokyo (18 mentions) is where the adult Natsuki lives, but it stays backdrop rather than scene. In the grandparents' house the relatives are labelled by the towns they came from — the Yamagatas, the Fukuokas — so places double as family names. Chapter one is the clearest case of the gap between setting and mention: it plays entirely in the mountains, yet the narrator names Chiba twice as often as Akishina, because home is what you name when you are away from it.

Akishina — der Ort, den es nicht gibtAkishina — the place that does not exist

The postal directory for Nagano Prefecture lists no Akishina. In interview Murata names 秋級 as her paternal family's mountain village; phonetically and graphically close are the real 明科 (Akashina) near Azumino and the remote mountain region 秋山郷 (Akiyamagō). The novel builds a place you cannot visit on real substrate.

ZeitebenenTime levels

›

Dates are almost absent; the calendar the book actually runs on is Obon, the festival of the ancestors, named 26 times and densest in the opening chapter. Ages do the rest of the work: "I was eleven and in year five of elementary school" fixes the childhood, and "three years ago, when I'd just turned thirty-one" fixes the present by arithmetic. Everything else is measured in summers.

The three registers are vocabularies, not plot lines: wand, mirror and Magic Police on one side; component, tool, nest and brainwashing on another; planet, spaceship, Earthlings on the third. Only the extraterrestrial vocabulary is present in every chapter, and it reaches its highest density of the whole book in the last one. Where one language takes over, the events do not change — the description of them does.

There is no frame, no second narrator, no letters or documents standing outside the voice. Natsuki reports in the past tense throughout, and nothing in the text steps back to correct her. The architecture is deliberately plain, which is what makes the one twenty-year cut between chapters two and three so audible.

Chapter two is the most cut-up, with 1.83 scene breaks per thousand words, and it is also the one where the Factory vocabulary first takes over. Chapter five talks the most (56.5 per cent dialogue) and chapter four the least, by a margin of 22 points against its nearest neighbour. Type here means the mode of presentation — how much is scene and how much is report — not the subject matter.

Five of the six chapters lie within ten percentage points of each other in dialogue share. A typology making three types out of that invents differences. There is exactly one real outlier, and it is the flashback — precisely where the abuse is remembered.

Small caps appear five times only, and they carry outside registers into the first-person voice: the checkbox categories of a matchmaking website (MARRIAGE, NO SEX, NO CHILDREN, REGISTERED MARRIAGE) and a newspaper headline. Three pictograms — a star, a bullet, an arrow — are set in symbol fonts inside text messages, the only place the book lets another medium show its own typography. Everything else is one text face, running unbroken.

Two more fields run underneath: body and eating (227 hits, peaking at the end) and the extraterrestrial (260 hits). The silkworm room in the grandparents' house — the image that gives the German edition its title — is the hinge between them: rows of creatures in boxes, fed to produce. Abuse belongs here too; Natsuki is assaulted by her cram-school teacher and is not believed at home, and the vocabulary of tools and components tightens around her from that point.

Theorien im BuchTheories in the book

›

The list separates what the figures invent from what exists outside the book. The Factory is a child's word for a commuter town, but its content — reproduction and work as duty — is ordinary social critique, which is why it is filed as ambiguous rather than fictional. Alongside the invented systems stand two real ones the novel simply uses: the sexless contract marriage and the doctrine that motherhood is a woman's fulfilment.

None of these seven is quoted, discussed or read; all of them work as everyday comparisons, the way people reach for a famous name to describe a person or a meal. Even the one song in the book belongs to the book itself — Piyyut's, invented on the spot. The absence fits the narrator: Natsuki's interpretive systems are self-built, not borrowed from anything she has read.

The contract marriage has a counterpart outside the novel: friendship marriage, a registered partnership without sex or children, discussed in Japan as a real option. The pressure behind it is real as well — Japan's fertility rate has fallen for a decade and stood at 1.14 in 2025. The map in this section therefore shows a mountain region rather than a pin: no settlement called Akishina can be found in Nagano's postal registers.
